SU Review: “Barn Mates”

So Steven will try to get Peridot and Lapis to co-exist in the barn. Unfortunately, Lapis wants nothing to do with her former interrogator and takes up residence atop the silo. Steven and Peridot try to give her a card (not the most sincere), a gift ( a bad reminder of Lapis being imprisoned in the ocean for months), even Peri’s tape recorder (doesn’t want her ‘garbage’), but nothing doing. Lapis just wants Peridot to leave, which she does until a Homeworld tracker starts to track down Peridot.

Lapis waterbends to knock down the tracker to save Peridot—creating a thaw in relations marked by Peridot smiling and Lapis blushing. The Crystal Gems arrive just in time to see a Ruby popping out of the tracker. To be continued…..

The more I follow this “In Too Deep” arc, the more I actually feel that this would be better served in “Steven Bomb” format, or even show all five parts in a 75-minute bloc, because that’s how it’s shaping up.

While there are good moments between Lapis and Peridot with Steven as the intermediary since it is not going to be easy forgetting the past, this episode really comes off as a fragment and it’s trying to tell a five-part story 11 minutes at a time, and showing part three thru five a week apart kind of disrupts the flow a bit as opposed to running them each day.

It’s still a good episode, but comes off as a fragment since it will be one week before we see the final 11-minute installment of this arc with “Hit the Diamond”.

Pluses and Minuses:

  • +  Peridot and Lapis interaction
  • –  Episode comes off as fragment

Ratings Report: MLP, LPS, and SU

For My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, it was an up week last week. “The Saddle Row Review” drew an estimated 252,000 viewers, last Saturday on Discovery Family. That is the third most-viewed episode outside the Season Six preview. The Season Six average is now 263,444 after nine episodes. This Saturday, it’s “Applejack’s Day Off” at 11:30am ET/10:30am CT on Discovery Family.

Three episodes to go for Littlest Pet Shop, but it might going out on a high (relatively speaking). “LPS: The Moosical” drew an estimated 128,000 viewers on Discovery Family for a second straight viewership increase. The Season Four average after 23 episodes now stands at 138,652 viewers per episode. Next up is “Seeing Red” at noon ET/11am CT on Discovery Family.

Steven Universe was slightly off from last week. “Barn Mates” drew an estimated 1.371 million viewers on Cartoon Network on Thursday night. That was the most-viewed original show on Cartoon Network on Thursday just about both Regular Show and Adventure Time. Next up is “Hit the Diamond” next Thursday at 7pm ET/6pm CT on Cartoon Network.

French CN Aired Next Two SU Episodes: Barn Mates & Hit The Diamond

Most people probably assume that American made shows are released first in America, but at least when it comes to the world of animation studios and television networks, doesn’t always hold true.  Apparently the French branch of Cartoon Network went ahead and aired both Barn Mates & Hit the Diamond.  Like anything else popular on TV, there are of course people waiting to record it.  Thus, if you look around carefully, you’re bound to find it.

And as always, even if you’ve seen it before it airs, make sure to tune in to support the show (if you can).

Edit: And yet another episode has appeared online, Steven Floats.

SU Spoiler Clips: Super Watermelon Island & Barn Mates

While it is unknown when Steven Universe will return, two clips have appeared online revealing almost 4 minutes worth of the upcoming episodes, Super Watermelon Island and Barn Mates. The clips appeared on the UK branch of Cartoon Network’s website and it is unclear if they were intentionally released or someone goofed while processing future preview clips.  The Super Watermelon Island clip runs 2 minutes and 51 seconds, while the Barn Mates clip runs 1 minute  and 19 seconds.  Both clips contain what we consider some pretty heavy spoiler material, so we’re not even going to embed the videos into the article.  Below are links to the CN UK pages, and YouTube backups.

Ep 227 – Super Watermelon Island Leak/Clip (YouTube)

Steven finds out what happened to all the sentient watermelons he created.

Ep 228 – Barn Mates Leak/Clip (YouTube)

Steven helps two friends get along at the family barn.

SU has been off the air since January 8th when the last episode Log Date 7 15 2 aired.
