The Toy Fair Report

2018%2Bseason%2B8%2Bmy%2Blittle%2Bpony[1]

On Friday, Hasbro made their annual presentation at Toy Fair NYC for investors and shareholders. In regards to My Little Pony, apart from the new toys coming,  it’s all about the movie for 2017. The movie, due to be released on October 6th, is billed to be a “whole new entry point” for people who are not already familiar to the franchise in its current form. According to MLP franchise lead, Tyla Bucher, the promotion of the movie will begin with Friendship Day sometime in July and then a product launch in August. Promotional partners are expected to take the brand to “unexpected places.”

Hasbro’s Head of Storytelling Meghan McCarthy was on hand to give a brief description of the new characters to be introduced in the movie:
• Capper – Con Artist Cat, turned hero  (Taye Diggs)
• Tempest – A Unicorn Who’s broken horn speaks to a troubled past (Emily Blunt)
• Songbird Serenade – The Hottest musical act in Equestria (Sia)
• Grubber – Hilarious bumbling side kick to The Storm King (Michael Peña)
• The Storm King – Big Bad Villain of the Movie (Liev Schreiber)
• Captain Caelano – Dynamic Leader of the Parrot Pirate Crew (Zoe Saldana)
• Qyeen Novo – Regal Ruler of the Sea Ponies (Uzo Aduba)
• Skystar – Energetic Daughter of Queen Novo (Kristen Chenoweth)

In addition, Blunt, Sia, Chenoweth, and Diggs will take part in five of the seven songs for the movie.

Perhaps the bigger story was a slide indicating that “The Magic Continues” in 2018. Many will speculate that means an eighth season of Friendship is Magic. We shall see for certain as Season Seven is set to begin this Spring. Whatever way you look at it, My Little Pony is not going anywhere soon and the movie is billed as “just the beginning” as it enters a new phase (not necessarily a new generation).

There was a brief mention of the reboot of Littlest Pet Shop during the presentation which is said to be in its early stages. LPS fans can expect digital  shorts in the Fall and a new animated series set for 2018.

Six New Characters revealed for upcoming MLP The Movie

And now for some My Little Pony Movie related information.

Meghan McCarthy, writer and co-executive producer for the upcoming theatrical MLP movie hinted on Thursday of some upcoming news.  That news was the reveal of six new characters that will be appearing in the movie via the voice actor & actresses Twitter accounts on Friday.  Unfortunately as the one who is writing this article, I have to admit I really do not have a clue what is going on with the movie, or who these characters are.  Further more, as someone who cares little about the entertainment business, I had to research into who exactly these people are.

Liev Schreiber is an actor, director, screenwriter and producer rising to general fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s with such movies as Random, Phantoms, Scream, and X-Men Origins as Sabretooth.

Kristin Chenoweth is an actress and singer with credits in the musical theater, film and telvision, and a Tony Award winner for her performance as Sally Brown in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.  She has also done various voice work in such films as Tinker Bell (as Rosetta), Rio 2, BoJack Horseman and American Dad.

Taye Diggs, another actor singer with a career more on the stage than in the films, known for his roles in Rent, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, his role on on the television series Private Practice, and his film role in How Stella Got Her Groove Back.

Emily Blunt is a British-American film and stage actress who has had plenty of stage and film work, and won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Gideon’s Daughter, and a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for The Devil Wears Prada.

Zoe Saldana is an actress and dancer who is best known for her work as Nyota Uhura of the recent Star Trek movies, Neytiri in Avatar, and Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Uzo Aduba is an American actress and singer, currently best known for her role as “Crazy Eyes” on Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, in which she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, along with a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and two Screen Actors Guld Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy  Series.  She is only one of two actors to win Emmy Awards for both comedy and drama.

And of course if you want to learn more, just go visit Wikipedia such as I just did.

The general feeling around the fandom/community has mainly been about the new character designs, such as Capper aka Catman.  The phrase of the day has been of course, Original Characters Donut Steel.  Unfortunately for those people, they’re canon, unless we plan on breaking the movie away much like people did with the comic, creating some sort of weird cartoon multiverse.

Since the clock is ticking down towards the movie, and a new season of ponies, we will be attempting to keep you informed.  All three of ya.

Legacy Records, Sony’s catalog music division, has announced a series of vinyl releases for Black Friday (November 25th) and MLP will be included with a new album entitle, “Expore Equestria Greatest Hits”. Below is a description of the item according to the Legacy press release:

My Little Pony – Explore Equestria Greatest Hits (Hasbro Studios/Legacy Recordings)

The new album, which includes a collection of top tracks from seasons 1-5 of Hasbro’s hit animated television series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, is now available as a special edition Record Store Day vinyl record pressed with colorful Pony artwork.

Inside the Numbers: Hasbro’s Q3 Earnings

On Monday, Hasbro announced their earnings for the third quarter of 2016 and it was the highest revenue and earnings quarter in the history of the companyNet revenues are at $1.68 billion, up 14% from this time last year. Net earnings reached $257.8 million compared to $207.6 million last year.

Like the last pair of quarters, revenues and earnings were buoyed by Star WarsDisney Princess, and Disney’s Frozen toy lines. Expect the former to continue to grow with Star Wars:  Rogue One coming out this December.

Franchise brands grew 2% with gains for Transformers, Magic: the Gathering, Nerf (for the 15th straight quarter), and Play-Doh (which grew for the 20th straight quarter). My Little Pony was not among the gainers, though emphasis continues to be placed towards the 2017 movie in addition to the new mobile app game “My Little Pony:  Puzzle Party” that was released last week.

“The My Little Pony franchise continued to drive brand awareness through the strategic use of entertainment, pop culture events and consumer products expansion,” said Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner as transcribed by Seeking Alpha. “In a very competitive small doll segment, our holiday items and new launches are beginning to drive POS gains in many markets around the world. In 2017, the My Little Pony movie will bring global audiences to all new worlds, with both the core cast of characters, along with all new characters.”

Again, it appears MLP is still in a bit of a transitional period as the movie approaches as well as a seventh season. Puzzle Party promises to be addictive (and costly if you want to get to level 143) while the Gameloft game is still a top 100 adventure game app. If we’re being honest, this has been a bit of a low-key year which was bound to happen. However, things might just pick up again with a 2017 movie and a 7th season.

Hasbro Releases 2017 MLP Plans

The press releases are fast and furious this Tuesday. After announcing HASCON for September, Hasbro issued a press release detailing that MLP Season 7 will indeed air on Discovery Family starting next Spring in addition to three Equestria Girl specials (each 22 minutes in length) on the channel that follows the event of “Legend of Everfree”. Also, the full list of guest voices for My Little Pony: The Movie set to come out onOctober 6th, 2017.

Below is the full press release:

Hasbro Announces My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Season 7 and New My Little Pony: Equestria GirlsSpecials for 2017

PAWTUCKET, R.I., OCT 18, 2016 – Today Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ:HAS), a global play and entertainment company, announces the 2017 return of two of the company’s most popular series – My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic andMy Little Pony: Equestria Girls.

The franchise’s iconic ‘Mane 6’ ponies will experience their most exciting adventures yet in Season 7 of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. The series will return to Discovery Family Channel in Spring 2017.

The spirited teens of My Little Pony: Equestria Girls will also return with three brand new TV specials in 2017. These brand new 22-minute specials will follow this year’s popular “Legends of Everfree” TV movie with more fun, fashion and friendship than ever before.

Both of these renewals will help drive excitement for Hasbro’s previously announced animated feature film My Little Pony: The Movie, which will premiere worldwide on October 6, 2017. The film features the voices of some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including nominated actress Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black), winning actress Emily Blunt (Into the Woods, Gnomeo & Juliet), winning actress Kristen Chenoweth (Rio 2, The Peanuts Movie), Taye Diggs (Murder in the First and Best Man Holiday), Michael Pena (Ant-Man, The Martian), nominated actor Liev Schrieber (Ray Donovan and Spotlight) and pop super star Sia.

“2017 will be the biggest year in the history of the My Little Pony franchise, including new and exciting stories that will air across television, various digital platforms and movie screens,” said Stephen Davis, EVP and Chief Content Officer of Hasbro. “The characters and humor of the My Little Pony brand appeals to audiences of all ages and demographics, and we think Pony fans are going love what’s in store in the coming year.”

INSIGHT:  Consistent with the belief that Hasbro is ramping up things in 2017 for MLP, this is proof positive that everything will be building up to the movie. Of course, it is unclear at present whether Season 7 will consist of 26 episodes or not. Regardless, the show is all but certain to reach the 150-episode milestone. It will be interesting how EqG will translate into three TV specials vs. one 66-minute feature and surely some intrigue follows after the adventures at Camp Everfree. The list of celebrity voices for the movie are all that were announced previously. We’ve only received bit and pieces for a couple (Schrieber and Blunt) while we know what kind of pony Sia will play.

It is suffice to say that after a relatively low-key 2016 for MLP, 2017 will be anything but in Equestria.
